Before You Decide on Solar Panel Cleaning
Solar panel cleaning is worth arranging when there is a clear reason for it. This page works through the questions that decide whether that reason exists on your property, including the situations where the sensible answer is to leave the panels alone for now.

Are the panels actually dirty?
Start with what you can see from the ground. Genuine soiling usually shows as concentrated patches of bird mess, a darker band along the lower edge of each panel where water drains and sits, green or brown organic growth creeping in from the frames, or a general dulling of the glass compared with a neighbouring installation on the same street.
A single mark on one panel is not a reason to book a clean. What matters is whether contamination covers a meaningful part of the array and whether it is the sort of thing rain will not shift. Take a photograph on a bright but overcast day, which shows the surface far more clearly than direct sunlight does.
Bear in mind that panels look darker than surrounding roof tiles by design. The question is whether they look dirty, not whether they look dark.
Is reduced output definitely caused by dirt?
This is the most expensive assumption in solar panel cleaning. Reduced generation and dirty glass often appear together, but one does not prove the other. Electrical and system faults produce very similar concerns: a tripped isolator, an inverter fault, a failed string, degraded cabling or a faulty optimiser will all reduce output regardless of how clean the panels are.
A few signals point towards a system issue rather than soiling. Output that fell suddenly rather than gradually. An error code on the inverter display. A string producing nothing while the rest performs normally. Output that stayed low after heavy rain, when the glass would have been washed to some degree anyway.
If the problem appears to involve the inverter, wiring or electrical output rather than surface contamination, the appropriate next step may be a qualified solar technician rather than cleaning. Also allow for normal seasonal variation, because shorter days and lower sun angles across a British winter reduce generation on any system.
Will rainfall clean solar panels?
Rain does a reasonable amount of work. On a well-pitched, exposed array, water running down the glass carries loose dust and pollen with it, and that is why plenty of panels look acceptable without ever being cleaned. Milton Keynes gets enough rainfall through the year for this to matter.
Rain is much less effective in other situations. Dried bird mess bonds to glass and generally stays put. Moss and algae rooted at the frame edge are not going to be washed away. Greasy grime from traffic or industrial activity needs more than water alone. On a shallow-pitched array, water tends to sit rather than run, so deposits can be left behind as it evaporates.
A sensible test is time. If soiling has survived several weeks of typical British weather, it is unlikely that waiting longer will resolve it.
How accessible are the panels?
Access shapes both the method and the price, so it is worth thinking about before you ask for a quote. The relevant details are the roof height, the pitch of the slope, how far up the slope the array sits, how many separate elevations are involved, and whether anything sits underneath the panels.
Conservatories, single-storey extensions, porches, awnings and boundary features all restrict where equipment can be placed and reduce the scope to work back from the elevation. Where the array can be reached from the ground, a water-fed pole system with purified water is normally the cleanest solution. Where it cannot, appropriate access equipment is needed instead, and that changes the cost.
Do not consider climbing onto the roof yourself, and do not lean a ladder against guttering to take a look. Roof work is not a homeowner task, and a photograph from the garden or pavement gives a cleaner more useful information than an unsafe closer look.
Ask how the panels will be cleaned
It is entirely reasonable to ask what will be used on your panels before agreeing to the work. Purified water matters, because ordinary tap water leaves mineral spotting as it dries. Soft brush heads suited to panel glass matter, because abrasive pads and stiff bristles have no place on a solar module.
Aggressive chemical treatments and pressure washing should both be treated with caution. High pressure can drive water towards seals and junction boxes, and harsh products are unnecessary for the kind of contamination found on a domestic or commercial array. Patience and dwell time deal with stubborn deposits more safely than force does.
Ask what happens if a deposit will not come away. The honest answer is that it is left rather than worked at until the surface is at risk, and you should be told about it.
Ask what is included
Quotes vary in what they actually cover, so it is worth pinning down. Confirm the number of panels included, whether the full array or only part of it is being cleaned, and whether frames and the immediately surrounding area are dealt with as well as the glass.
Check how heavily soiled sections are handled, since these are the parts that take the longest and are sometimes quietly excluded. Confirm the access method the price assumes, and what happens to the price if that method turns out not to work on the day.
For commercial premises there is more to agree: site induction requirements, permits to work, whether the visit needs to be out of hours, how equipment gets onto site, which areas need cordoning, and who signs off the arrangements. Getting that in writing beforehand avoids the visit stalling on arrival.
Regular cleaning or one-off?
Repeat cleaning suits some properties and is wasted money on others. Rather than committing to a schedule in advance, the useful approach is to have the first clean carried out and then observe how quickly soiling returns to your specific array.
Where there are trees overhead, regular bird activity, a shallow pitch or nearby industrial and traffic grime, a planned interval usually earns its place, because it stops deposits baking on hard and makes each visit quicker. Where the array is exposed, well pitched and clear of trees, a single visit every few years may be all that is ever needed.
For commercial sites a schedule is more often sensible, because facilities teams need predictable, budgeted work and access equipment is cheaper to organise for a known date. Even then it should follow the observed rate of soiling on that roof rather than a figure applied to every building.
